The Wilungula Family Welcomes a Newborn

We are pleased to announce that, on May 3rd, during a monitoring mission in the Mikeno sub-sector, a team of community trackers observed a newborn in the Wilungula family – one of the 10 habituated mountain gorilla families in Virunga National Park.

For the moment, the female remains discreet, protecting her baby and preventing its sex from being determined. Close observations will continue in the coming days. As the individuals in this family have not yet been precisely identified, detailed information on the baby’s mother is not available at this time.

This marks the third mountain gorilla birth recorded in Virunga National Park in 2025, and the first within the Wilungula family, which now counts 37 individuals.
