The WHO has declared this Ebola outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. A strain of Ebola with no vaccine has spread across seven provinces in eastern DRC. Virunga has already built and is operating three screening stations along the main corridors leaving the outbreak zone, screening more than 1 million travellers and identifying 45 suspected cases as of September 2026. We need your help to keep this network running and to close the gaps that remain.
Virunga is 500km wide at its broadest point, forming a natural barrier along the main routes leaving the affected region. But it’s Virunga’s rangers, community networks, and existing operations across North Kivu, a province at the centre of the outbreak, that have turned that position into results. Three more stations are planned to close the remaining gaps in the screening network, along with a new treatment unit to care for suspected cases closer to where they’re found. Virunga’s resources are already stretched thin, and this expansion depends on additional funding.
