Virunga National Park Ranger, Kasereka Masumbuko Ezéchiel, killed in action

It is with deep sorrow that Virunga National Park announces the death of Park Ranger Kasereka Masumbuko Ezéchiel, following injuries sustained during an incident in the Park’s Central Sector on the morning of 28 November, 2018. Ranger Kasereka and his colleagues came under attack by armed militia at a Ranger Post on Lake Edward. The situation has been stabilized and the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.

Ranger Kasereka has been a brave member of Virunga’s ranger team since 2012. The Park wishes to express our profound condolences to his family for their tragic loss. We offer our sincerest gratitude for his dedicated service to Virunga National Park and the local community.

Ranger Kasereka is survived by his wife, Justine, and their seven children. Tragically, over 175 Rangers have lost their lives in defence of Virunga over the past 20 years.
