Virunga National Park is greatly saddened to confirm the deaths of Rangers MEDDY KENGU Mahomet (29 years old) and HAKIZIMANA NDAMIRA Benoit (31 years old).
The two Rangers lost their lives on 23rd December in an armed attack when conducting a routine patrol in Chondo in the central sector of the Virunga National Park. Initial investigations suggest that the attack was carried out by individuals assimilated to the Mai-Mai, an armed group that operates in and around Virunga National Park.
Virunga National Park expresses its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the two courageous Rangers, and to all those affected by this tragedy. Their sacrifice serves as a further reminder of the bravery of so many young Congolese who risk their lives on a daily basis and to whom we owe an everlasting debt of gratitude.
