MEDDY KENGU Mahomet and HAKIZIMANA NDAMIRA Benoit
Virunga National Park is deeply saddened to confirm the death of Rangers MEDDY KENGU Mahomet (29) and HAKIZIMANA NDAMIRA Benoit (31).
The two Rangers lost their lives on December 23 in an armed attack while on routine patrol in Chondo, in the central sector of the Virunga National Park. Initial investigations suggest that the attack was carried out by individuals associated with the Mai-Mai, an armed group operating in and around Virunga National Park.
Virunga National Park expresses its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the two brave Rangers, and to all those affected by this tragedy. Their sacrifice is but a reminder of the bravery of so many young Congolese who risk their lives daily and to whom we owe an eternal debt of gratitude.
