It is with profound sadness that Virunga National Park announces the death of Park Ranger Hakizimana Sinamenye Chadrack following serious injuries sustained during a wildlife related accident in the Park’s Central Sector. Ranger Hakizimana was gathering water at the river’s edge on the morning of 29 March 2019 when the incident occurred. He was quickly evacuated by park aircraft to Goma for emergency medical treatment but tragically succumbed to his injuries on the night of 02 April 2019. He was 38 years of age.
Ranger Hakizimana has been a courageous member of Virunga’s Ranger team since 2010 and has played a vital role in the conservation of wildlife in Virunga’s Ishasha Valley. We are indebted to him for his dedicated service to Virunga National Park and the communities that surround it. The Park would like to offer its deepest condolences to his loved ones during this trying time.
Ranger Hakizimana is survived by his wife, Jemima, and their three children aged 12, 10 and 3.
