It is with deep regret that Virunga National Park announces the death of Park Ranger Kambale Vyasaki Germain, following an attack by Mai-Mai militia on a ranger position around the locality of Nyamilima on the evening of 03 March 2020. Ranger Kambale was undertaking operations to secure the park’s border as part of its efforts to reduce human-wildlife conflict and to protect the local population from the threat of armed groups.
Ranger Kambale has been a dedicated member of Virunga’s Ranger team since 2017. He was 28 years of age at the time of his death. His body has been repatriated to his home village of Bulongo, located near the city of Beni.
Ranger Kambale’s tragic death serves as a further reminder of the courage and commitment of the Virunga Ranger team and the sacrifices they make to protect the wildlife and communities that surround the Park. Virunga National Park is eternally indebted to Ranger Kambale for his loyal service and would like to offer its deepest condolences to his loved ones during this time.
