The Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature confirms the arrest of Jackson Muhukambuto on January 9th in Butembo.

The rebel leader was apprehended by Virunga National Park rangers through a carefully planned sting operation, following a long investigation into ivory trafficking across the province of North Kivu.

In addition to his involvement in ivory trafficking, Jackson MUHUKAMBUTO is also held responsible for numerous crimes committed by armed individuals placed under his command. Over the past three years, these actions have claimed the lives of 19 rangers in Virunga National Park as well as many civilians and members of the armed forces (for more details: https://kivusecurity.org).

The accused was handed over by ICCN to the appropriate judicial authorities with a view to further investigate the charges against him
