Death of Virunga National Park Ranger Kambale Kasuki Jean Aimé

It is with great sadness that Virunga National Park announces the death of Ranger Kambale Kasuki Jean Aimé who was killed following an ambush by armed assailants on a civilian convoy he was protecting. The attack occurred during the night of 13-14 November on the national highway near Ngwenda village (Rutshuru Territory). Tragically one of the truck drivers also lost his life during the incident and a second ranger sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Ranger Kambale joined ICCN in 2011 and served honorably for several years as a patrol officer in the Park’s Central Sector. He was 30 years old and leaves behind his wife, Rachel. His body will be buried in Butembo.

Our thoughts are with Ranger Kambale’s family as well as family of the truck driver during this very difficult time. We are eternally grateful for the valiant work of ICCN rangers who work tirelessly to protect Virunga National Park, its unique wildlife and its neighboring communities.
