“New Troubles at the Gates of Virunga”

Oil Exploratin Threatens Virunga National Park

Desmond Tutu, Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town, Howard G. Buffett, President of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and Sir Richard Branson, Founder of Virgin Group have collectively written an Op Ed piece for the Huffington Post  on why oil exploration in Virunga National Park is neither lawful or likely to deliver benefits to the average Congolese person. Their collective vision for the park — and lasting peace in eastern Congo — hinges on respect for the rule of law and using Virunga’s renewable natural resources as an engine for sustainable economic development. This Op Ed is a must read.

It is fantastic to see such a statement. I really do hope that enough pressure can be built to eventually remove this serious threat from the park. In my profession as a scientist and academic, I wrote a letter to SOCO as well. Unfortunately, the power of money and self-interest is very strong in this world and short-sightedness abounds. What I like about this piece is how it makes the case that the park is actually what will drive development, which in turn will secure its future. I think that is very true.

We must stop SOCO from destroying Virunga and harming the gorillas. Please sign the petition to stop SOCO and spread the word:

FYI: National Park means STAY OUT!
There are so many things way more important and vital to us all than money.
