Bageni and Humba groups welcome new additions

Virunga’s mountain gorillas have been a most welcome source of good news in 2018 and it just keeps getting better. We are thrilled to announce two new births, bringing a total of nine new gorilla births this year.

In the Bageni group, 19 year-old Kayenga gave birth to a boy. This is Kayenga’s third child, and with this latest addition, the Bageni group has grown to 30 members. In the Humba group, 8 year-old Anangana gave birth to her first baby — a girl. The Humba group now has 11 members.

Over the last decade, Virunga National Park’s mountain gorilla families have played a major role in increasing the worldwide population, which now stands at over 1000. This is a significant jump from the 790 individuals recorded in 2010 and it is fantastic to see this magnificent, yet highly endangered species, continue to thrive.

In what has been a challenging year for Virunga, the health of the Park’s mountain gorillas is testament to the contribution our rangers have made to the conservation of the species. Recent events illustrate that Virunga’s rangers pay too high a price for their extraordinary work. If you would like to help support them, please consider making a donation below.
