Situation
The ongoing regional conflict has significantly heightened security risks for our Rangers while they work to protect the Park. 13 rangers have been killed in militia ambushes on the roads, making road transport perilous. To enhance Ranger safety, we intend to expand our air wing operations. This strategic move will support our Ranger's efforts to safeguard wildlife & promote development initiatives within the Park, without exposing them to unnecessary risks.
Solution
Funds raised will be allocated to the expansion of airstrips within the central and northern sectors of the Park, which are habitats for critical keystone species like eastern lowland gorillas, hippos, lions, and elephants. The extension of these runways is essential to ensure the safety of aircraft, particularly the larger ones, accommodating for Virunga's new fleet of aircraft and enabling our airwing team to conduct night flights.
